Formula Used

Monthly lease payment = depreciation charge + rent charge + estimated tax.

Method

How This Auto Lease Calculator Works

A lease payment is mainly built from three pieces: the value the vehicle is expected to lose during the lease, the financing charge for using the lessor's money, and taxes or fees that apply to the payment. This calculator separates those pieces so a low monthly number is not the only thing you see.

The calculation starts with gross capitalized cost, subtracts capitalized cost reductions such as down payment, trade-in credit, and rebates, then compares that adjusted cap cost with residual value. The residual is usually set by the lease program and often uses MSRP rather than the negotiated selling price.

Data and source notes: No live lease program, residual table, tax table, or dealer quote data is used. The result depends on the money factor, residual value, cap cost, tax, fee, and mileage assumptions entered by the user.

Practical use

What to Check Before Signing an Auto Lease

Capitalized cost

Negotiate the sale price first. A lease still has a vehicle price, and a higher cap cost can hide inside a payment-focused offer.

Residual value

A higher residual usually lowers payment, but it also affects the buyout price if you want to purchase the vehicle later.

Money factor

Convert money factor to an APR-style number by multiplying by 2400. This helps you compare the financing cost with other offers.

Mileage and wear

Low payments can become expensive if your driving pattern creates excess mileage or end-of-lease condition charges.

Examples

When the Calculator Is Useful

Dealer quote audit

Enter the dealer's price, residual, money factor, and fees to see whether the payment roughly matches the quote.

Target payment planning

Switch to target-payment mode to estimate the vehicle price that fits your monthly budget before visiting a dealer.

Mileage decision

Compare expected annual miles with the allowance to estimate whether a higher-mileage lease may be worth pricing.

FAQ

Auto Lease Calculator FAQ

Is the money factor the same as APR?

No. Money factor is the lease finance factor. A common estimate of APR equivalent is money factor multiplied by 2400.

Why is my dealer quote different from this calculator?

Lease tax rules, acquisition fees, rebates, registration fees, first payment timing, security deposits, and state-specific rules can change the final contract. Use this as an estimate and compare it with the lease disclosure.

What is adjusted capitalized cost?

It is the gross capitalized cost after subtracting capitalized cost reductions such as cash down, trade-in credit, and rebates. It is the working balance used to compute the base lease payment.

Is a lower monthly lease always better?

No. A lower payment may require more money due at signing, a lower mileage allowance, a higher disposition fee, or a lease structure that is not right for your driving habits.

Should I compare leasing with buying?

Yes. Leasing can reduce monthly payment, but buying builds ownership equity over time. Compare payment, total cash out, expected miles, maintenance, insurance, and how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

Does this calculator include excess mileage charges?

Yes, it estimates mileage exposure from the annual mileage allowance, expected miles, lease term, and excess mile charge entered by the user.

Can I use this to audit a dealer lease quote?

Yes, for a rough check. Enter the dealer's negotiated price, residual, money factor or APR equivalent, fees, tax, and due-at-signing assumptions, then compare the estimate with the official lease disclosure.

Does this calculator use live residual values or manufacturer programs?

No. It uses the residual and money factor values you enter. Manufacturer lease programs can change by model, trim, region, credit tier, and month.
